Martial Arts, Lion Dancing, and Traditional Chinese Medicine --Three Foundations of Chinese Culture.

Birth of the Academy

Chen Weiyang, Blue Tile Heritage Center's restoration builder, hails from the famous kung-fu or martial arts village of Jingmei in the countryside of Jiangmen. It is here that Choy Lee Fut was founded by his ancestor, Chen Xiang (Chan Heung) in 1836.

Trained since the age of 10 and now a master martial artist and the president of the Xinhui (Sunwui) Choy Lee Fut Association, Mr. Chen envisioned the fruitful collaboration of Choy Lee Fut with the Blue Tile Heritage Center. Thus, a new training academy was established.

Carrying Forward an Ancient Art

From Shaolin to the Wide World

Kung-fu generally refers to any of the thousands of styles of Chinese martial arts. The term kung-fu (功夫) literally means any skill that takes ongoing hard work and dedication to master.

The most influential tradition in kung-fu has been the Shaolin tradition. At the multiple Shaolin temples, kung-fu was systematised and became legendary. Choy Lee Fut's lineage descends from Shaolin. Northern Shaolin is famous for extensive kicks, jumps and mobile footwork. Southern Shaolin, on the other hand, is famous for powerful hand techniques and low, solid stances.

Because Choy Lee Fut's founder, Chan Heung (Chen Xiang) had teachers from both the Northern and Southern traditions, Choy Lee Fut is fortunate to have both aspects, which adds to its versatility.

The Chen Family follows Grand Master Chen Yong Fa--Choy Lee Fut's Keeper of the Style (Jeung Mun Yan).

For thousands of years, Chinese martial arts were traditionally passed to male descendants or members of the same clan.

Over the past 180 years, Choy Lee Fut disciples have taken these arts all over the world, wherever Overseas Chinese have settled.

Since the 1980's, Grand Master Chen Yong Fa has opened the treasures of the Chen Family System to the outside world, including material formerly only taught within the Chen family.

Traditional
Chinese Medicine

The Choy Lee Fut system contains the Traditional Chinese Medicine knowledge from its Shaolin lineage. It has been a strong family tradition within the Chen family, with skills passed down from teacher to family disciples.

Perpetuating Age-Old Values

At Blue Tile Heritage Center, we recognize that martial arts can transform children in remarkable ways. Training in Choy Lee Fut is proven to build not only physical agility and health but also life skills such as perseverance, teamwork, and compassion for others.

The moral code of Choy Lee Fut, known as Wu De (武德), emphasizes cultivating a strong and virtuous character alongside martial skill. It promotes respect, discipline, and ethical conduct in all aspects of life.
